In time of test, family is best

June 19, 2011
  • Title Inspiration: “In time of test, family is best.”-Burmese Proverb
“There is no doubt that it is around the family and the home that all the greatest virtues, the most dominating virtues of human society, are created, strengthened and maintained.”-Winston Churchill
“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”-Jane Howard
Good afternoon SQers! To those of you who might be fathers or be celebrating the father figures in your own life…Happy Father’s Day! My dad is a pretty amazing man himself. We share a lot of the same personality characteristics (some which are better than others). Nevertheless, I think I owe a lot of the person I am to my dad. He’s always been there for me for better or for worse as one of my biggest supporters. Even though I am pretty sure he will probably never read this, I just wanted to take this opportunity to write him a little shout-out and say thank you for everything.
The past two weeks for me  have been a welcome change from the rut I have been in for several weeks.  What changed was that I got to spend some quality time with my family.  Sometimes when we become busy, we get so consumed by our own worries that we forget what is most important. Family is an important priority in the lives of many and with good reason.  Your family has been with you for years longer than you can say most other people in your life have. It is in  the shelter of your family that you learned to walk, share, love and other morals which shaped you into the wonderful person you are today. Family is like a safe haven and few people will ever love you as unconditionally as your family does.  No matter where we end up, we have to remember where we came from
As much as we all would like to believe that we are superheroes and can do it alone. Truth is we can’t.  As humans we thrive on our relationships with other people.  No single person has all of the answers. We need other people to care about, to love, to share and to make memories with. On the flip side, in our darkest hour we need help and love. We need to know that we have people in our lives who love us unconditionally and can help us get back on track.  You might argue  that there are instances in where your family might drive you nuts, but what good relationship doesn’t have its occasional fights and bickering.  Fortunately, in most cases you will find the positive memories outweigh the negative ones.
Maybe your idea of family does not fall into the perfect “nuclear” family that you see popularized by the media and society. Maybe your family is a little large and a little crazy (like mine) or perhaps your family/tribe/clan is composed of best friends instead of relatives. Whatever the family in your life might be, take the time to recognize and be thankful for the importance of having one. And when things get a little too hectic and stressful, take the time to go back to what you know and are comfortable with.  Make mistakes, get a little R&R,  get in touch with your inner child and spend time together while remembering all the while: you are loved. And love despite what you may otherwise get deluded into thinking…always prevails.
That’s all for now. Have a fantastic week!
See you next Sunday,
❤ SQ
