No excuses. Play like a champion.

March 28, 2010

“Hold yourself  responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects you, never excuse yourself.”~Henry Ward Beecher

“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours – it is an amazing journey – and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.”~Bob Moawad

Welcome back and happy Sunday! Hope you all had productive weeks. Thank you for those of you who commented last week! I enjoyed hearing  about what you used to want to be when you grew up and it did make for a good story didn’t it? I may have shortchanged you this week of a title inspired song, but if you would like here’s one to make it up to you…”Champion”-Kanye West

As humans among other things we have evolved extensive capabilities involving procrastination and lying. When stuff gets down to the wire, we may cut corners to get to that final finish line. At first you might think…no way.  That’s not me, I am an honest person. I am sure you are, but that you have made excuses just as frequently as the rest of us. The problem with excuses likes in the verb we use with it: some variation on make. If you genuinely had a substantial reason you would not be making excuses..you would not need to.

So where do we cross the line? When does one excuse become one too many? To my knowledge, there is not a specific number. You have to realize it for yourself when you make excuses not out of necessity, but rather out of habit to make things easier for yourself. You should expect better from yourself and hold yourself to a higher standard as the Beecher quote alludes to. Grab your own life by the reins! Wake up every morning with the intention to live it as a committed and dedicated person. It’s your life so hold yourself to a higher, but realistic degree. You know perfectly well what you are capable of and cut out the excess because there’s no b or s in the word champion.

If you do not believe me about the excuse thing, try writing down all the excuses you make in a day or an entire week. It might surprise you.

That’s it for this week. Short, sweet and succinct. See you next Sunday!

Sometimes we get so bad we make excuses for making excuses. It’s a never ending, vicious cycle. Love the post.

Thanks for the comment by the way!

I can’t stand it when people constantly make excuses. Sometimes I catch myself making them and I get annoyed with myself. I think they just make you look worse because you either are too weak to take responsibility for your own actions or you didn’t see something coming before it happened. I think standing up and taking responsibility makes you look that much stronger.

yeah it is one of my pet peeves too. including people that are fake and lie a lot.
i agree i think it does make you look weak in most cases.

This is such a great post – because it is so true! Sometimes I think we spend some much time and energy making excuses and keeping track of them, it would be easier to just take care of the chore instead of avoid it.
This also makes me think about lies. Maybe you believe little white lies are acceptable, but it’s such a fine line… once you start lying, it’s hard to stop.

it is kinda funny how much energy we invest into making excuses. it seems almost as if we allocated that excess energy towards whatever we should have been doing we would have been that much more productive. lying and excuse making seem to follow the same vicious cycle and i think there’s even some overlap between the both of them
thank you eva for sharing your thoughts!
